Common Causes of Truck Accidents
No matter what the cause of a truck accident may be, the consequences of
these types of collisions can be serious and, in the worst case, fatal.
Driver fatigue is a major cause of accidents in the trucking industry. This is often
because trucking companies award drivers for arriving on time or early,
and so have a hard time deterring drivers from driving tired or over the
legal amount of hours, even with extensive federal regulations in place.
Additionally, many truck accidents occur due to the following reasons:
- Drug use
- Alcohol consumption
- Distracted driving
- Impatient driving
- Failure to comply with signs and signals
Accidents Caused by Truck Driver Fatigue
According to the United States Department of Transportation, almost 4,000
individuals suffer fatal injuries in semi-truck crashes every year, and
driver fatigue is one major contributing factor. Although the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates the amount of hours big-rig
truck drivers can operate to ensure they are not driving while fatigued,
many drivers disregard regulations, making the roads dangerous for other drivers.

Understanding Truck Driver Hours-of-Service Rules
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, truck drivers
are required to abide by numerous hour-of-service rules, including the
The 11-Hour Driving Limit: A driver may operate a truck for a maximum of 11 hours after 10 consecutive
hours off duty.
The 14-Hour Limit: A driver may not operate beyond the 14th consecutive hour after coming on duty, after 10 consecutive hours off
duty. Off-duty time cannot extend a 14-hour period.
Rest Breaks: A truck driver can operate a vehicle only if eight hours or less have passed
since the truck driver’s last off-duty or sleeper-berth period of
at least 30 minutes. This does not apply to truck drivers using short-haul
exceptions listed in 395.1(e).
60/70-Hour Limit: A truck driver cannot drive after 60/70 hours on duty in 7/8 consecutive
days. A truck driver can restart a 7/8 period after taking at least 34
hours of consecutive hours off duty.
