Geography of Reading, Pennsylvania

Reading is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania at 40°20′30′′N 75°55′35′′W, approximately 65 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The United States Census Bureau estimates the city's total area to be 10.1 square miles. It contains 9.8 square miles of land and 0.2 square miles of water (2.39%). The Schuylkill River, Mount Penn, and Neversink Mountain form the city's western, eastern, and southern boundaries, respectively. The Reading Prong, a mountain range extending northeast into New Jersey, has become associated with naturally occurring radon gas; nonetheless, Reading dwellings are not disproportionately affected. Many family-owned farms can be found in the surrounding county.

As of the 2020 census of the United States, Reading had a population of 95,112. 68.9% of the population was Hispanic or Latino, 18.9% was non-Hispanic White, 8.5% was non-Hispanic Black, 0.7% was Asian, 0.1% was Native American or Pacific Islander, and 2.9% was mixed or other.

As of the 2000 census, there were 30,113 homes, of which 33.7% had children under 18 living with them, 34.4% were married couples living together, 20.2% had a female householder without a husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. Individuals made up 31.7% of all households, and 12.4% of those individuals were 65 years of age or older. The average size of a home was 2.63 and the average size of a family was 3.33.

In the city, 29.9% were under the age of 18, 11.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 28.9% were between the ages of 25 and 44, 17.0% were between the ages of 45 and 64, and 12.4% were 65 years of age or more. The average age was 31 years old. There were 93.3 men for every 100 females. There were 88.5 males for every 100 females aged 18 and older.
